2.0a: your cpu may now breathe

veadotube mini 2.0a is out, with a ton of bug fixes! if you were having issues migrating from 1.4 to 2.0, this update is for you >:] let's see what changed:

  • DirectX support on Windows! this means better performance, less stuttering, and hopefully better Game Capture and Spout Capture support on OBS, especially when it comes to transparency. we aimed at DirectX 11, so if your machine doesn't support it, it should fall back to OpenGL again.
  • huge CPU usage drop! on my end that meant going from 30% to 4% in average :] there were lots of optimisations on the render side and processing side to make that work. did you know microphones were half of the issue here? processing audio can be demanding, apparently!
  • huge RAM usage drop! we fixed a huge memory leak (you know, that one), and we also added a new option for loading states on demand, meaning you'd get a bit of a delay when changing states but also less RAM usage from the app.
  • cap the frame rate! you can now turn off vsync (which is on by default) and set whatever frame rate you want. this also helps drop CPU usage!
  • lower system requirements for macOS and Linux! it should now work with as low as macOS 12 Monterey and Linux 5.15 (for reference, that's Ubuntu 22.04 LTS). we cannot go lower than that with macOS, unfortunately, which is a limitation with the tools we use. blame Apple?
  • a few fixes on macOS! less crashes on display sleep/reconnect, less bugs with microphones, and we also made the app borderless to make capture easier (if you select hide UI it should also make it truly borderless, meaning you won't need to crop out any borders on OBS)! we're aware of the other bugs -- we're still investigating them, it's hard when our MacBook is old and dying and we also can't reproduce M-series bugs. you can continue blaming Apple, thanks.
  • shortcut fixes! the Alt key should work on Windows again, idk how we missed that. we also fixed MIDI shortcut conversion between 1.4 and 2.0 files.

we also updated the Stream Deck plugin to 1.0.3, which should crash less and waste less system resources, especially for those with dozens of states! we're also speaking with Elgato to put it on their plugin marketplace thingy, so you won't have to manually copy the plugin around anymore.

oh, and if you liked the language update in 2.0, you might be interested in knowing that users have translated the app to French, Simplified Chinese, and German! these are not official, and can be found on our Discord server (there are plans to have a more public and indexable directory for user add-ons and mods). also, if you ever work on a RTL language pack, it should now display properly with a flipped layout and everything :]

in other news... (aka the may devlog? partially?)

thanks for the support during the 2.0 release!! it was a huge moment for us after not updating mini for almost a couple years. we hope this update fixes most of the issues you guys were having with it -- making an engine from scratch is hard and breaking things is easier than it should be.

we continue to work on the full version, which will hopefully have its first version (or third, considering the old patreon versions) available this month in the lab and in the early access ko-fi -- it was expected to be available last month, but alas, mini 2.0 broke and we had to focus on it again AHDFA we continue not being good with deadlines i guess.

(on a personal note: thank you for the support in the ko-fi and through itch.io! i'm slowly managing to fund that surgery i mentioned in the last post, and you guys somehow raised about 30% of the entire thing since the last post. i genuinely can't thank you enough!)

what else... oh, we got a shoutout from the Sheezy staff a while ago, and tube the deer was featured for a while too which was funny bc i just opened the website the other day and our child was up there. anyway you should use Sheezy :] it's a good art website and we like them and they like us and we're besties and you should also follow us there (olmewe & bellaexclamation).

also, if you like Bella's art, do know that every monday from now on, they're doing PWYW art commission streams, and you should keep an eye on it! go get some weekly art, subscribe, click the bell, and see you guys in the next video, etc.

ok this should be it for now -- we're gonna continue keeping an eye on bugs and whatnot, but hopefully mini 2.0a is stable enough that we can focus on the bigger part of the project now >:] hope you guys enjoy the update!

I'm not able to use 2.0 or 2.0a, on windows with game capture OR Spout2, OBS is showing the size of the window in the preview, but it's completely transparent and not showing my model. I've updated my graphics drivers and DirectX as well, I believe. And I've tried running both OBS and Veado Mini 2.0a as Administrator.

The memory usage is still a tiny high but the GPU as improved greatly! Thank you

I'm very happy that the issue is almost fixed

Now I hope the GPU priority option add to veadotube

(no lagging veadotube while 99% load GPU with game)

My toaster of a computer thanks you for reducing CPU usage! :D
