the august devlog
hiii welcome to the month of august :] this is the part of the month where we tell you we're working on veadotube.
so how's been work?
july was a busy month for us! we spent a lot of time getting things ready for Brasil FurFest and then recovering from the event. first time selling veadotube merch was fun, and getting to meet people who recognised the app was also fun! if you were there: thank you :] wish we had photos to show but none surfaced yet. visualise us sitting at a table looking tired with a bunch of funny stickers and whatnot.
we still updated veado, though! members of the lab and the ko-fi membership saw some minor updates on the node editor in veadotube live, as well as lots of revisions on the linux side. the linux version now also supports SDL3, which brings proper wayland support and all other experimental features. SDL3 is still unstable, meaning that its support breaks once in a while due to frequent API changes, so this will remain an early access (lab/ko-fi) exclusive for now!
and what's coming next?
this month we're focusing on adding scene states to veadotube live :] these will let you add states to your scene, assign property overrides to each state (move an avatar to another side of the screen, hide/show avatars, etc), specify how states interpolate between each other (if the movement will be spontaneous or animated), create multiple state lists that can overlap with each other, and then of course control the state machine however you like through the node editor.
unfortunately no pictures of the state editor for now! development on the UI side just started so there isn't much to show. but when it's done, this will let users control a lot more aspects of their setup, and the code we're writing for this will also be reused for creating avatars whenever we start developing veadotube editor, so this should give you guys a taste of having multiple custom state machines at your disposal :] we'll have proper pictures demonstrating this in the next devlog, and throughout the month lab/ko-fi users should be getting access to this feature as we develop it.
better editor tools are also to come after states are done, along with new nodes, anchoring, whatnot. proper camera support in veado live should also be a thing in the next couple months! we plan on adding image processing nodes including face tracking, mouth tracking, attempts at expression tracking, all that. of course, this won't enable full face tracking avatars yet because only veado live is in development right now, with veado editor coming later. but it should let you control mini avatars (open/closed mouth switching, state switching) with your face! fun stuff!
how's everything else?
hmmmm we haven't talked much about casco the engine recently. that's because it has essentially morphed into being the veadotube engine, bc we specialised it in doing veadotube and nothing else! during my free time however, i've been working on studying the parts we liked and disliked about it, and slowly turning it into a separate, proper game engine that can be used with other projects :] absolutely low priority but nonetheless something that's happening now.
and i think that's it for now! a short one because of the slow month, but now things should pick up steam again. xo
